Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle yet powerful hands-on therapy that helps the body’s natural tendency to find health and optimum balance. A Craniosacral Therapist does not focus on specific conditions, but on the underlying health that is always present in the body.

However, life experiences such as birth, accidents, injuries, toxicity, emotional problems, stress and prolonged strain may affect the body and cause disease. During these events, the tissues in the body contract; if there is an emotion linked to the event, the tissues may have problems returning to their normal balance. This might manifest in neck and low back pain, chronic fatigue, temporomandibular joint syndrome, fibromyalgia and even emotional issues like depression and anxiety. The "memory" of these events or traumas can stay in the body for a long time.

Craniosacral Therapy is performed with the client lying on a treatment table while the therapist holds the head and/or the sacrum. The therapist "listens", via the hands, to what is going on in the body in order to identify and help relieve pain, tension or strain. The patient may feel a deep sense of relaxation and become aware of heat, tingling, pulsations or other sensations. Some people find that it may take a few sessions to get used to what they are feeling. For these reasons, he or she may need to consider having a series of treatments to gain the full benefit of Craniosacral Therapy and its cumulative effects.

Post treatment, the patient usually feels calmer and can concentrate more easily. The posture or coordination may improve and the patient may have less pain; perhaps that nagging headache is now gone. Or maybe he or she will feel more optimistic about life in general. The issues in life that have been a source of anxiety no longer seem so challenging -- or difficult to get over. Because it has such a wide range of benefits, CST can be used in conjunction with other therapies, including emotional treatment.
